Keep an eye on Rembrand, a digital platform using AI to add virtual product placement into videos. They just raised $23 million from savvy investors like Tom Chavez and others. The concept is relatively simple and has been around for a while, but the company is definitely getting some traction. Rembrand began with YouTube and expanded to LinkedIn, TikTok and Instagram. They’ve also worked with about 20 brands including those under PepsiCo, L'Oréal, and Amazon. The company is led by CEO Omar Tawakol, who has great startup experience. He sold data management platform BlueKai to Oracle in 2014 and voice collaboration platform Voicea to Cisco in 2019. It’s another intriguing use of AI and video, and it gives advertisers another weapon in their arsenal as they monetize content. What other uses of AI advertising have you seen that impresses you?

Disturbance in the Force: Phoenix Labs Phoenix Labs has entirely closed its San Francisco expansion after already downsizing in Vancouver, and has retreated to Vancouver, where it has apparently gone down to a skeleton crew. All games that were in various states of development have been canceled. Forte, the blockchain gaming company that owns Phoenix Labs as of a year ago, has tried to reduce the burn rate and staffing as much as possible, likely because of their own cryptocurrency problems. Everything is getting cut. Forte is pushing Phoenix Labs to retreat into live operations of its two existing titles. This is one problem with exclusively, focusing on a free to play with live operations approach. F2P publishing costs don’t ramp down on the release of the game, they ramp up because of user acquisition. Beyond marketing, a free to play PC/console title that’s getting ready for release is not going to see necessarily a reduction in cost, the user acquisition costs were apparently more than bear. Phoenix Labs may have been defeated in the end by a combination of being sold to a cryptocurrency company and focusing on a business model that company couldn’t handle. ——— “Video game developer lays off 162 Bay Area workers as brutal trend continues” (Stephen Council) (May 29, 2024) Phoenix Labs, a Vancouver-based video game developer, has laid off 162 Bay Area workers. The company disclosed the cuts in a WARN filing on May 22, as is required in the event of a mass layoff. The workers were based in Phoenix Labs’ Foster City office, at 950 Tower Lane, and, per the WARN notice, served in a variety of roles — programmers, artists, designers, animators, directors, analysts, engineers and more. The layoffs will be permanent, the WARN notice said, and took place the day it was filed. The news continues a brutal trend for the gaming industry’s workforce, which has seen massive job cuts this year at major companies like Electronic Arts, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Unity Software and Riot Games, which Phoenix Labs’ co-founders left to form the Canadian studio in 2014. Phoenix Labs will be canceling work on all projects to focus on its Dauntless and Fae Farm titles, according to the company’s post about the layoff on LinkedIn. “After a long period of evaluating how to navigate our economic environment, we have had to significantly restructure the company to pave a path for a strong future,” the studio wrote. Phoenix Labs did not immediately respond to SFGATE’s request for comment or question about the details of employee severance. Laid-off employees also took to the social media job site, posting “#OpenToWork” messages, expressing gratitude for their time at Phoenix Labs and bemoaning the loss of exciting projects. Two weeks ago I spent 3 days with brilliant human beings discussing the state of AI investment with other angel syndicate leads, angel investors and VCs at Hustle Fund's #camphustle in Los Gatos. It was brilliant. Truly awesome to learn so much from insanely accomplished investors. But was so clear to me again is that the US and the UK are two countries divided by separate languages of ambition. Aspiration and ambition underlined by the cluster effect of successful exits, incredible talent and venture capital driven by operators and founders rather than accountants. But one reason why the US often trumps (pun not intended) the UK is they learn from failure. Run a startup that didn't reach the dizzying heights of venture-scale returns? Learn, reset and go again. What they certainly do not do is look at failure with glee and an "I told you so" attitude. Which is what I sense when I read most of the narrative around the failure of Cazoo. Alex Chesterman swung and missed. The business was flawed, unit economics didn't add up and in reality - there was very little innovation outside the vertical alignment of a well-understood business. But when we look down upon what he tried to do and 💩 💩 it all we're doing is making it harder for someone else to be equally as ambitious. Focus on what went wrong. Focus on the fundamental underlying business models that drive efficient use of capital and the push for profitability. But let's celebrate people shooting their shot and not celebrate the failures.

🚀 It’s a big day at Hoop! We’re excited to share we’ve raised $5m led by Index Ventures with participation from Origin Ventures, Chingona Ventures, Divergent Capital, and an inspiring group of angel investors. Two years ago, Justin, Brian, and I got together and started brainstorming. We had worked together as early executives at Trello for 7.5 years! We wanted to recreate the magic of the early days of Trello and respond to the epidemic of distraction we were seeing in the workplace. When I left Atlassian, I was in back-to-back meetings most days. Slack was constantly buzzing. My whole day was spent going between apps and praying I wouldn’t miss something important. I would wake up in the middle of the night remembering that DM I forgot to respond to. In an age of AI, this kind of mental fatigue across tools drains humans of our energy to do the work that really matters: the focused and creative work that comes when we can feel secure that we’re on top of all important work. Hoop is the product I wish I had. It connects to Zoom, Google Meet, Slack and email and automatically captures tasks for me using AI. It then centralizes everything in one spot so I never miss a task. Our vision is to rethink task management with an AI first principles mindset. There’s so much we can do now that we couldn’t have imagined back when we were building Trello.
